Mukaaku Criticises Bobi Wine’s Political Strategy, Calls for Grounded Opposition Leadership

The National Chairman of the Democratic Front, Samuel Walter Lubega Mukaaku, has criticised former Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, presidential candidate of the National Unity Platform, for what he describes as poor political strategy and leadership during his recent period in hiding.

Speaking on Next Big Talk, Mukaaku argued that while personal safety may justify leaving the country, political leaders have a responsibility to maintain visibility, consistency, and engagement with supporters at home.

“Every individual, for their safety or personal reasons, is free to leave the country… However, political leadership demands weighing decisions against their impact on movements and supporters,” Mukaaku said.

He raised concerns that Bobi Wine’s statements about working with individuals during his absence could expose both himself and allies to scrutiny, potentially creating vulnerabilities.

“You can create flaws in your own strategy. For example, Mr Kyagulanyi says he worked with these security guards and others over the two months—don’t you think the state would be very interested in knowing who these people are?” Mukaaku said.

Mukaaku further criticised Bobi Wine for failing to articulate a clear roadmap for achieving political change, stating that effective leadership requires guiding supporters directly rather than operating from abroad.

“You have more advantages in staying with your people—leading them, suffering alongside them, sharing experiences, and commanding from the front—than in running away,” he added.

These remarks come as Bobi Wine’s security situation evolved, with police and military personnel fully withdrawing from his Magere, Wakiso District residence after a two-month deployment. During his absence, Bobi Wine engaged in international advocacy on Uganda’s political situation, including presentations at the Geneva Summit and meetings in Washington, D.C..

To maintain party continuity, he appointed Dr Lina Zedriga Waru as acting president.

Bobi Wine continues to reject the official election results declaring Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the winner, citing alleged electoral manipulation, while urging peaceful protests rather than pursuing legal action. Government officials have dismissed claims of persecution and urged him to return.
